Sasha & Ruby “Hay Fever” (SINGLE)

One of the more interesting things about “Hay Fever” by Ruby & Sasha, is that it refuses to chase obvious seasonal optimism, but that doesn’t necessarily make it an entirely satisfying listen. While the concept of using allergies as a metaphor for emotional disconnect is thoughtful and original, the execution sometimes feels more restrained than revealing, leaving the listener admiring the idea more than feeling fully immersed in it.

The songwriting paints an effective picture of standing on the outside looking in while the world blooms around you, and there are certainly moments where that imagery lands with genuine sincerity. However, because the lyrics remain intentionally open-ended, they occasionally hold the listener at arms length rather than inviting them into the emotional core. Instead of offering vivid personal snapshots that deepen the narrative, the song relies heavily on atmosphere, making its central message sound somewhat elusive before it fully blossoms.

Musically, “Hay Fever” follows a familiar quiet-to-loud progression that is undeniably well executed, though not particularly unexpected. The very patient opening creates anticipation, and the gradual rise in intensity succeeds in building momentum, but the arrangement sometimes seems more interested in maintaining mood than delivering predictably memorable hooks. The eventual guitar solo provides the emotional peak the song has been working toward, yet it almost overshadows everything that comes before it, making the earlier sections sound more like an extended introduction with equally compelling chapters of the journey.

That isn’t to say the instrumentation lacks quality. Quite the opposite, the musicianship throughout is polished, and tasteful. Every instrument serves the arrangement well, and the dynamic shifts are handled with care. Still, technical finesse doesn’t always translate into emotional acceptance, and there are stretches where the performance feels carefully measured. For some listeners, the level of restraint will enhance the song’s reflective nature; for others, it may prevent the emotional payoff from reaching its full potential. Not unlike the allergy itself.

There is also an understated sense of humor woven into the premise that gives the song some personality, even if it never fully commits to either wit or melancholy. That balancing act is admirable, but it can also leave the overall tone caught somewhere between quiet contemplation and cathartic release without completely embracing either.

As a companion piece to their debut “Outdoor Shower,” the song demonstrates that Ruby & Sasha are committed to exploring nature from multiple emotional perspectives rather than repeating themselves. The contrast between the two tracks is welcome, showing a willingness to experiment with mood and pacing while remaining connected by shared thematic roots. Even if “Hay Fever” doesn’t resonate as immediately as its predecessor, it reinforces the duo’s artistic identity and suggests they’re more interested in developing a distinctive voice than chasing instant gratification.

“Hay Fever” is a respectable and thoughtfully constructed song whose ambition occasionally exceeds its emotional impact. While its concept, musicianship, and gradual build deserve recognition, the track may leave some listeners appreciating its craftsmanship more than truly connecting with its heart. Even so, it serves as another intriguing step forward for Ruby & Sasha as they continue to refine their sound and explore fresh creative territory.
