“Bygones My Love” by Mike DeSorda, is distinctly different than a previously released song with a similar title which calls for some distinctions between the two, with Jenna Cogan on vocals, and this being a faster bluegrass number with a completely different vibe. This doesn’t come easy, but once you hear both songs it’s obvious they come from different places, and even I was thrown for a loop until revisited the ballad. Mike DeSorda keeps you guessing that way, or it’s something deeper which can’t be nailed down just by listening to both of the songs.

Getting that out of the way is important enough for listeners, but it’s about “Bygones My Love” and the energy it brings to the table, with some brilliant instrumentation behind her voice, which takes things in a completely different direction on this soul stirring track with beautiful harmonies and world class musicianship DeSorda is already known for. And this review is not a comparison of the two songs; it’s more of an acknowledgement of them and the differences between them which both feature Wicklow’s Jenna Cogan. It’s Mike DeSorda and fans who get the benefit of Cogan’s vocal contribution.
The musical arrangement is nothing short of excellent to begin with, giving “Bygones My Love” all the added energy it needs to breathe and thrive for over three minutes that don’t stand still, and resonate well beyond the time stamp. It doesn’t matter if you love bluegrass music or not, it’s more of a musical number anyone can appreciate either way. This is another uneasy feat about “Bygones My Love” with its crossover appeal to country and folk music listeners without being too grounded in hardcore bluegrass, keeping it true to the genre because it’s a diverse style to begin with.
“Bygones My Love” comes on strong from the first notes, and keeps it steady throughout the song, leaving a lot of room for Cogan’s vocal magic to drive the lyrics to their destination, which is as many ears as it can reach. The result is a song full of good bluegrass cliche’s with a vibrant delivery by all parties involved. The engineering and production are second to none, with a perfectly even sound mix to put the icing on the cake, making the vocals and instrumentation virtually seamless. “Bygones My Love” is more than bluegrass, it’s an overall slice of Americana.
With Jenn Cogan’s capabilities, “Bygones My Love” can’t be denied, as it aligns with Mike DeSorda’s guitar picking capabilities on display, and the mighty string arrangement does the rest, at times reaching lightning speeds with banjo and other instruments rounding out a song with hit potential. This paring of DeSorda and Cook is an idea that works wonders for them both, as they sound like they’ve been playing together for a long time, so it comes off very well written and rehearsed before it was recorded. If that is not the case, it sure comes out that way as they nailed a chemistry together that makes it a winning number.
