Tennessee via Minnesota based Troy Castellano’s “I Only Dance When I’m Drunk,” shows both sides of the rocker and the country artist, but it’s more of a mid-tempo pop rock and country combo making a statement about the effects of too many spirits. This is done with tongue placed firmly in-cheek, with a fun-loving tale about blaming booze in the morning for getting a little too excited on the dance floor the night before. It’s a typical but modern take on a classic idea, and Castellano owns it all the way, with his own great version of the topic.

“I Only Dance When I’m Drunk” might be a title that speaks volumes for itself, but I wasn’t sure how it was going to sound when I saw the title of this single, and although I wasn’t surprised by how it sounds, it could’ve went any direction. It turns out it comes with instant familiarity and the humor in which the title suggests, with a top-notch arrangement behind it. This is well arranged and produced, and the subject matter being on the humorous side; it does all the right business for Castellano, being a blending artist who knows how to spice up a tune.
Getting drunk and living to tell about it because you don’t usually dance is a great way to set up the words for such an immediate title to get the humor on the table from the beginning, and “I Only Dance When I’m Drunk” becomes instantly easy to sallow. If you like country mixed with pop laden hooks and a traditional style pf pop rock, you’ll be enormously satisfied with this single. The songwriting quality of Castellano speaks volumes for itself, and the production fits every turn of the notes throughout the fun-lovingly arranged composition and lyrics.
I like everything about this song and Castellano’s crafting, but the title might throw anyone off at first, it’s just a matter of taking the time and not regretting it within the first verse of “I Only Dance When I’m Drunk.” The rest of the story carries on and you’re buzzing away with it and can’t deny it as your toes are tapping along. This is an artist starting to gain all the traction and numbers and a 2025 full-length album entitled; Beautiful Blur, which is chock full of the same quality music and production values on the table.
I wouldn’t change anything about “I Only Dance When I’m Drunk,” as it ticks all the boxes with no question. It’s also an outstanding crossover tune between country and rock circles Castellano is well known and versed in. This isn’t your typical or average artist, but he does mainstream with the above average, standing over and above most on the circuit. Being a rocker might help that, but there’s still an overall country dominance, and the cadence of Castellano’s voice sounds born to sing country music. In closing, the former is much worth mentioning, as not everyone is cut out for such things.
