HIGHLAND KITES

How has your 2021 been so far? Any projects in the works that you can tell us about?

Absolutely wild. My husband and I recently made the move to Nashville, we moved into a fixer upper so there’s been a lot of renos and projects going on. For the first time in my life I have an actual dedicated music space that I can write and record in, so that’s been really great.

We are a band that’s always relied so heavily on playing live, we love it so much. So, with the pandemic it’s been quite an adjustment. I really miss it.

We are about to release a new single (in April). This one is produced and recorded by us, and mixed/co-produced by an incredible friend of ours here in Nashville (Nick Bullock).

We put quite a lot of heart into this song, and we’re hoping it resonates with and inspires people.

What is the best part of being an artist?

Wow I don’t know how to pick one thing. Since I was a child I have loved creating. I spend my childhood creating worlds and acting them out with my friends, crashing my parent’s work parties with dances we choreographed or stealing the mic at a Christmas party to sing people a song. We didn’t have social media or computers back then so this was how my friends and I kept entertained, and it really shaped the way I think as an adult. I love watching people’s faces light up when you create something from nothing. As I grew up and went through life, I experienced some really hard times, both physically and emotionally. I started to lean on writing poetry and stories. Through these I came to fully understand not just the joy of art, but the complete necessity of it for this world to keep going at all. Art got me through SO much. Being able to lean on my favorite artists during the hardest times of my life gave me the inspiration to do this for others. It keeps me persisting to know that I could help someone with my story and my art. I want to inspire others to create. If I can remind someone that there’s hope, and that their voice and art matters to this world, I feel like I’ve done my job.

What’s your favorite piece of work? How can we listen?

This is also hard to answer! It’s like being asked to pick a favorite child. I want to apologize to all the ones I didn’t pick. Haha.

If I were to give a snap answer to this though I would say it’s a song I wrote called “I’m Not Weak”.  It just marks a time of intense growth in my life and realizing that all that I’ve been through has helped me become who I am today. I made peace with my past, since it brought me to where I am now. I stopped wishing I could take away the pain and figured out how to grow from it.

It’s available on all platforms, here’s a Spotify link to it as well:

What can fans expect next from you?

If you follow us on Instagram you’ll see a whole series of poems/videos I created with the help of my sister (who took the photos and video). They’re each telling a story, leading up to the release of the song. Putting this together has been super therapeutic and fun, and really digs into this release and the thoughts behind it.

After this next single release we plan to release one more single, and then I’ll be writing a ton & have high hopes for recording a full EP again.

How can our followers show love to your work?

We are on all platforms, and obviously every bit of support helps us.

We’re the most active on Instagram and you’ll get more behind the scenes with us there if you’re interested in the whole process and our lives in addition to the music.
