TEYQUIL

Super stoked to welcome you Teyquil! Tell us a little bit more about yourself and how you got on this road to pursuing music.

I’m super stoked to be here. Can’t thank you enough for interviewing me.  Well, I was born and raised in Philadelphia where the energy is always at its highest level and it’s an exciting time when those moments occur in the city of Philly haha. I think I was about six years old when I first discovered the king of pop, Michael Jackson on the Tv screen and I remember being hypnotized by this man’s presence and delivery as a performer and musician. Ever since then, my profession was confirmed, and I knew what I wanted to do from here on out. Music is in me and it paints a picture for others to see even when I’m unaware of it. To be honest, I truly can’t see myself doing anything else.

One thing that I’m always interested in, when I sit down and chat with artists or bands, is when or what their defining moment was that they knew that they wanted to be in music… What was that moment in time for you?

Music has a way of putting us in spaces and moods like no other and it fills voids where it seems most empty at times. When I discovered that music is relatable and can pretty much understand where you may be in life, I instantly fell in love with it and from that encounter, I knew I wanted to be in music. It moves you, it embraces you, it releases you, it hurts but also supports. The day music made me cry was a moment in time I realized that we were connected in a special, unusual way.

How involved in the single were you? Do you write all your songs and do you mix and master yourself or do you have an engineer or a producer that works with you?

This question is superb and I’m eager to answer! No, I had no one working on this project with me. I am lucky, blessed and so humbled to be able to record, produce, write, sing, mix and master my own work. I am again, humbled in that regard to be able to. I have so much fun dipping in all these roles when it comes to the process, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I am personally on a mission to get good music heard by everyone. What is one thing that bothers you the most about trying to come up in the music world today and, do you prefer being underground or, is the mainstream something you strive for?

What bothers me the most is excessive mounds of bullshit that people throw at you when it comes to an artist and their music. For example, people message you from out of nowhere requesting if they can organically get you more exposure through social media but have nothing to show when it comes to meeting the artist halfway in proving the work they so-call can do. It’s annoying and so frustrating. My dream was to always make it mainstream and I guess that’s the goal in most cases. However, music is vital and so present in my DNA and as long as I can continue to create, I’ll always be striving and perfecting my craft for the day I do get my shot to take the stage and become one with such a beautiful, musical, massive platform.

One question that I like to ask artists is, how did Covid affect your music in particular and the music scene in your area?

I know for me, covid had a major impact on what I could and couldn’t do and it made it extremely hard to do anything music related. Like so many others, I was stuck in my home and restricted from the outside world. I made music in my home but it was nothing like collaborating and building ideas with other creatives. Venues in my area were shut down and the world of entertainment came to a halt. Music fell into a coma and it left everyone else waiting by its bedside for a miracle.

I grew up in the 90’s, I listened to everyone from Dr. Dre, to Weezer, to Pink Floyd, Metallica, Cypress Hill and back again. I truly believe that the 90’s were one of the greatest era’s for original music. Which era of music is one of your favorites?

Another superb question! One of my favorite era’s of music would be the 80’s hands down! What an awesome decade filled with loads of good music and talented musicians. My sound is influenced heavy by the 80’s that is also assisted by electronic synth, bass, and melodic keys. It has a sway of that era along with mine but the mixture together sums up my approach and contribution to the world of music as a whole.
